Bucket Hat

PRODUCT DESIGN
The fashion industry is notorious for its high levels of waste production, with an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste generated each year. Much of this waste comes from outdoor gear and clothing that inevitably wears out or loses its functionality over time. However, rather than contributing to this waste, repurposing already-made fabrics can provide a sustainable solution for producing new products. By using existing materials instead of producing new ones, the environmental impact of fashion production can be reduced, and the lifespan of the materials can be extended, helping to limit waste and promote more sustainable consumption.

These bucket hat designs give new life to used outdoor gear, jean legs discarded from cutoffs, or any other fabric found around the home.

Denim Bucket

MATERIALS: blue jean, black wash jean, scrap diamond quilt cotton
ONE SIZE FITS MOST
Ever found yourself with discarded pant legs after cutting an old pair of jeans into shorts? This design provides a sustainable solution by utilizing the scraps of fabric that would typically go to waste. By cutting the sides of the hat directly from the pant leg, the design maximizes the already sewn parts of the repurposed garmet.

Tactical Bucket

MATERIALS: Repurposed Eiger Gore-Tex raincoat
ONE SIZE FITS MOST

The fabric and treatments used to make outerwear and raincoats often involve the use of synthetic materials and chemicals that can have negative environmental impacts. A busted zipper or deteriorating liner should not end the life of a garmet that takes so much energy to produce.

The tactical bucket hat is made out of an old raincoat in which the waterproof lining had deteriorated beyond use. Construction details such as the pocket, pocket liner, and drawstring browband were repurposed directly from the rain coat.
